By far the largest wild Canid in South America, the maned wolf is an oversize yet incredibly graceful dog-like creature with rufous red coat, white tail-tip and legs so spindly it is sometimes described as a giant fox on stilts. Tui De Roy documents these dogs standing three feet at the shoulder it is taller than a great Dane, yet is so gracile that, at 50 pounds, it weighs no more than a small basset hound. In actual fact it is neither fox nor wolf at all, but a mysterious hunter leading a mainly nocturnal life in open savanna scurblands and gallery forest throughout central Brazil and small parts of Bolivia, Peru, Paraguay and northern Argentina. Adaptable and resourceful, individual wolves are loners ranging through enormous territories where they live off a wide variety of foods, from rodents and birds to venomous snakes, armadillos and insects, and very rarely even prey as large as deer, as well as a whole range of vegetable matter.Text by Tui De Roy
